Lightning Talks: Making Space

What does it mean to make space, in our cities, our communities, and ourselves? Join Urban Environmentalists LA for an evening of storytelling, dialogue, and connection. Making Space is the inaugural event of a new series bringing together thinkers, doers, and dreamers at the intersection of urbanism and environmentalism. This event will have two parts: 1. The talks: come learn from experts in LA on a wide variety of topics related to "Making Space" in the built environment. Each talk will last up to five minutes! 2. The discussion: After the talks, up to 15 folks can head upstairs to the Jai Tea Loft for a more intimate discussion with experts, snacks, and free-flowing tea. Secure your $10 ticket at https://www.jaitealoft.com/gatherings. Please RSVP for head counts and to stay tuned about event updates.

LA Climate Week: Join or Die Film Screening

The Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance, Urban Environmentalists LA, and the Westside Urban Forum are coming together to host this screening of Join or Die during LA Climate Week because it speaks to our present circumstances, with both climate action and democracy itself at a critical juncture. What can we do as local organizations to strengthen democracy and bolster our commitment to a healthy environment, despite unprecedented headwinds?

Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club—and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.

Order of Events:

  • 6-7pm: Arrive and mingle; You can enjoy Au Lac’s LA Climate Week menu consisting of three specials offered at $11-$12. (You can also order from their á la carte menu.)

  • 7-8:40pm: Film screening

  • 8:45-9:30pm: Discussion
